The source shows no changes in the life of the students as they still have schools before and during the Japanese Occupation. However, there was a change in the language they learn as they need to learn a new language, Japanese, and they all have to learn this common language to communicate.

In the colonial days, students of Chinese schools eschewed the British anthem and sang San Min Zhu Yi, Nationalist China's anthem. Indians sang their own in Hindi. Students in English primary schools were taught God Save The King, which their chosen choirs rendered beautifully with heart and soul on the Silver Jubilee of George V and the coronation of George VI. Only the classy cinemas, like Cathay, that screened the rendition of the anthem by a ceremonial army band before the start of a movie.

Students had to stand facing the direction of Japan's flag and sing the Japanese national anthem. It was a new thing for the people and it took them some time to adapt with the new language.
